We are in a sorry state when a 60-40 vote is good news, but I submit that the majority of United Methodist Church voters made a bold and correct move.
For those who are not familiar with what the Methodist Churches are about or the principles upon which Methodism was founded, the below link will be helpful. In short, morality and faith were major components of the core beliefs of the Church.

The pressure that militant homosexuals have put on Christian and Jewish bodies to give their approval to homosexual activity has been enormous. Add to that the apathy of Church members of mainline Protestant denominations (Catholics also) on this made-up issue, and the picture becomes even more clear.
Like Leftists in general, many homosexuals are not in any way content with being free to do what they want; they want to ensure that you refrain from anything short of complete acquiescence of their agenda. While Leftists harbor more anger at the fact that you get to live in a non-Marxist society than that they themselves do not live in one (Unlike Marxist States we allow people to leave), radical homosexuals and their iconoclastic supporters spend inordinate amounts of time and energy to strong-arm individuals and groups to give their approval to their actions.
We have yet another example of the attack on Western Civilization and its values. Religion, unless it is of the Islamic variety, has been under assault for decades in the West. While our freedoms diminish one-by-one, the only thing that many feel that they have left is be free sexually. Indeed, while crosses and Menorahs are being uprooted, prayers are being banned, parental authority is mocked, and having any respect for our history and heritage is demonized, we are encouraged to go crazy in our intimate lives.
Even this is not enough as the campaign against Western Civilization includes the complete dismantling of Christian teaching and its bodies. Evangelical/Fundamentalist Churches, being very decentralized, have built-in protection against such things as infiltration by Marxists and radical liberals; if anything like this appears on the radar, the wolf can be asked to leave the Church. If the local church sees its congregation being lead in the wrong direction, the church can split, with the faithful finding another place, if need be, to worship in peace according to their beliefs.
The militant/radical homosexual agenda does not care if their people can pretend that their "couples" can be married, what they want is the death of marriage, period. Leftist thought is replete with all sorts of attacks on "exclusiveness". Anything that excludes anyone or any group, even if it does not bother in any way those on the outside, is wrong.
Nationhood, religion, marriage, culture, and ethnicity all stand in the way of a classless society in which people have no sense of identity save their submission to the State. Nationhood can only be done away with by ensuring that everyone can live where they want (meaning that any number of people can, upon deciding that nation X is would be a nice place to reside, move there). Any that dare stop them are racists and guilty of "exclusivity. It does not matter if we don't have enough jobs, housing, or money, the Left needs your nation to be run into the ground in order to eliminate national borders and create a Marxist dominance of all former nations under one umbrella. The people of a nation such as Norway watch as their culture is denied and placed under the multicultural yoke. The turning point in which the culture of that nation (Among others) can not be salvaged without terrible repercussions, violence, and massive rebuilding is very close.

The family, along with national sovereignty, private property, and religion, all stand in the way of the Marxist agenda and must be also be sent to the dustbin of history. The only way to put a real dent in marriage is to open it up to everyone. Once marriage can be any combination of genders or amounts of people (One trio in the Netherlands civil-unioned each other - boy 'married' both girls and the girls each 'married' boy and each other* -At bottom), marriage appears to have no purpose. The rational is obvious - make a mockery of marriage so that people see no reason why they should get a "piece of paper" in order to live together.
If I wanted to go to go-go bars (which I do not) I would be wrong to insist that the Catholic Church make a public proclamation that go-go bars are OK to patronize. Militant homosexuals steadfastly refuse to admit that a body has a right to decide what activity is sinful or not. As a side note, the Catholic Church, to which I belong, although it has been pathetic in its dealings with pedophile Priests, also went through the grinder when it described homosexual activity as "intrinsically disordered". It is ironic, that in addition to being assailed by the Left for this, many Evangelicals/Fundamentalists also hit the Church hard on this one. Why? The Church dared to acknowledge the difference between homosexual acts and the mere inclination/condition/desire to engage in such activity. The latter in of itself was not described as sinful. As with any temptation, the Church recognized that people have crosses to bear and this must be addressed in by prayer, faith and abstinence. Many Evangelicals and Fundamentalists, having an entirely modern view of Christianity, insisted that anyone who is a Christian (And they have very narrow definitions of that) would not ever be so inclined in the first place.

As I noted at the top, the issue of gay marriage is made up. Gay marriage, even if it gets an official stamp of a Church or State or National government, still does not exist. Marriage is an institution that exists even in a pre-governmental State of Nature, therefore, it, by its very essence, cannot be subject to definition by a governing body. Governments can be created to protect marriage, (Such as to prevent the guy being killed and the woman being carried off, a person marrying another before obtaining a divorce, or ensuring that all parties are of age and in agreement), just as they are entered into by people so that that for which they worked can be protected (Such as one's property or home), but they cannot posses the authority to decide what marriage is.
Even the Catholic Church, a Priestly-oriented Church body in which a substantial part of ones' religious life mandates the presence of a Priest in the Parish, recognizes that two of its Seven Sacraments can be performed without a Priest being present. In the event that no Priest is around (In the case of Baptism) nor expected to be around anytime in the near future (Baptism and Marriage), these two sacraments can be validly and licitly performed without a Priest. My point is that the Church recognizes the importance of marriage, its pre-Church foundation, and that it is an institution ordained by the Creator that cannot be restricted to the on-scene approval of Church authorities. In the event that all Priests have been run out of town or killed (Like in Japan under the Shogunate), marriage will go on without the presence of Church or governmental authority. Following that acknowledgement is the obvious; an institution that the Church cannot prohibit simply due to the absence of the Sacerdotal presence also is not subject to being redefined by that same body.
In closing, some of the worst bullies that we have out there are radical/militant homosexuals. Activist Dan Savage, who inexplicably touts himself as an anti-bullying speaker, showed how viciously the militant homosexual agenda can be manifested. Two links are below:
