"God Bless the USA" Pulled From NYC School

Here we go again....

"A controversial Coney Island principal has pulled the plug on patriotism.

Her refusal to let students sing “God Bless the USA” at their graduation has sparked fireworks at a school filled with proud immigrants.

Greta Hawkins, principal of PS 90, the Edna Cohen School, won’t allow kindergartners to belt out the beloved Lee Greenwood ballad, also known as “Proud to be an American,” at their moving-up ceremony.

Five classes spent months learning the patriotic song, which skyrocketed in popularity after the 9/11 attacks and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

It was to be the rousing finale of their musical show at the June 20 commencement. The kids, dressed up for their big day, would wave tiny American flags — which, as the lyrics proclaim, “still stand for freedom.”

But Hawkins marched in on a recent rehearsal and ordered a CD playing the anthem to be shut off, staffers said.

She told the teachers to drop the song from the program.

“We don’t want to offend other cultures,” they quoted her as explaining.

[Jessica] Scaperotti [Dept of Ed. Spokesperson] noted PS 90 kids recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “America the Beautiful” each morning. Insiders say Hawkins tried to end that tradition a couple years ago but staff objected.

The principal, a Jehovah’s Witness, does not recite the pledge because her religion forbids followers to salute any nation’s flag. Staffers gripe she doesn’t stand in respect during the school-wide ritual.

The song uproar comes amid tensions. Hawkins has been called a tyrant and bully by some staffers.

The DOE reprimanded her in 2010 after teachers complained she called the school “racist” and declared: “I’m black. Your previous principal was white and Jewish. More of us are coming.”

I first was confronted with the concept of refraining from displays of love of one's county in the police academy in 1990. During one class on Ethics, the instructor indicated that the wearing of an American flag patch on the police uniform could be perceived as discriminatory by a person who is stopped by a police officer. The scenario that he brought up to illustrate his point was one in which an individual who did not like and/or respect the US could feel intimidated by seeing a symbol of the presumably hated nation on the uniform of the officer.

Although the term itself was not employed by the instructor, this was my first experience with Multiculturalism.*

I recall being more aggravated by the utter stupidity and intellectual snobbery of the instructor than I was at the idea of a person who dislikes the country enough to feel threatened by the display of the flag (But not enough to leave it).

We are fed a steady diet of reminders that we should refrain from any overt displays of love of our country, our culture, and our faith. While we are told to to do so, others, many of whom not only not only have no respect or admiration for our foundations but are actively opposed to them, are encouraged to celebrate their cultures and even express their disgust with our nation and its people.

Again we see the excising of our history in the public school system. Generations of Americans were raised with school curriculums that provided students with the knowledge of the sacrifices made by others that allowed us to remain as free as we have been up until now. Our children have been purposefully denied any real concept of what those who came before us have given up so that others could have a better future.

This particular case is a bit harder to nail down when we search for the intent behind it. While the most common cause of such acts is the Leftist agenda of creating blank slates in the minds of children, thereby making them unaware of who they are and thus more malleable and susceptible to Marxist thought, this Principal is a Jehovah’s Witness. Witnesses teach, as a central point of their doctrine, the obligation of the believer to refuse to profess any loyalty or allegiance to any nation. Naturally, Witnesses are perfectly willing to reap the fruits of everyone else’s work and sacrifices that contribute to the same free countries in which they live.

This is a perfect opportunity for those who organized this event to just go ahead and have the kids sing the song in spite of the Principle’s ban. I would love to be able to do a post on the howling and ensuing retaliations from Principle Hawkins. I think that those who held firm with their plans would be considered heroes by most Americans.

-on Multiculturalism, they are very good reads:

"If we assume that this emerging ideology of transnational Multiculturalism is a totalitarian ideology, we should remember that most totalitarian ideologies have a Villain Class, a group of evil oppressors that can be blamed for all the ills of society. If the ruling ideology falls somewhat short of producing the Perfect Society it has promised, this will be followed by even more passionate attacks on the Villain Class, be that the Jews, the capitalists, the bourgeoisie, etc. The Villain Class of Multiculturalism seems to be Western culture and persons who happen to be born with a white skin. Any problems will automatically be blamed on “white racism,” which will ensue more suppression of free speech for whites.

One of the hallmarks of a Villain Class is that its members can be verbally abused with impunity, and that they are increasingly physically harassed or even killed while the state seems in no rush to protect them from these assaults. The Villain Class is subject to public scorn and has de facto or even de jure less legal protection than other groups. They have their property and their culture stripped away from them, and any attempts to protest the policies or ideologies that are causing this will be met with even more repression. "

  1. Jehovah's Witnesses and the flag salute.
I was born into the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1957.I was the good little JW boy who got beaten up in the school yard for not saluting the flag and remaining seated for the national anthem as demanded by my defiant Jehovah's Witnesses leaders.
This was the better dead than red era of the 1960’s, and a kid not doing the act stood out big.
I suffered much, only to learn that the Watchtower corporation is just another made up man-made religion.
My JW leaders *forced* *compelled* me NOT to salute the flag,I wasn't given any option. If I wavered I would be severely punished by my parents and struck down by God at Armageddon.
Kids suffer because of made-up rules by Jehovah's Witnesses leaders, senile old holy men sequestered in their insulated ivory tower.
My point is:Jehovah's Witnesses claim 'neutrality' that is false as they DO try to force their convictions on others.

  2. Being caught in the middle between JW rules and vicious fellow students is certainly not an enviable position. We had only one JW family in our grammar school (70's) and fortunately none of that occurred.
My main problem with JWs is that they want to live completely apart from everyone else but won't take the logical step of living among themselves as do the Amish. Having been deprived even of a life of growing up with their coreligionists, JW Children get to see other kids playing with each other (Our JW's were told to refrain from having their kids play with non-JW's), celebrating fun and treasured times like birthdays, Christmas, the Fourth of July, etc., without being able to participate. From what I have learned in reading about JW origins, the ideas of Charles Taze Russell seem to have been tied into the thought that arose out of the Adventist movement. It was a time in which various groups sought to outdo each other in being the most holy. To do so, each needed to seize on new thing to make their own and to present as proof of how right they were compared to other Christians bodies. 7th Day Adventists and some others applied Mosaic Law to their followers and began Saturday worship, thus ignoring 1st Century Christian practice/scriptural understanding, and condemning all Sunday worshipers to judgement. JWs themselves did originally celebrate Christmas, a fact that JW leadership denied for many years before explaining that this was due to the fact that early JW's had not come to a proper understanding about holidays. This need to prove how more righteous one's Church is than others is alive and kicking today with many Evangelicals and Fundamentalists, who never miss a chance to point out how wrong whatever you are doing at the moment may be. From what I have experienced, and I have experienced a lot with them, these acts are all-too often accompanied by a curious willingness to be very dishonest in their own communications with non-Evangelicals/Fundamentalists, including a bizarre proclivity to call in sick to work just to have days off. Their application of honest communications seems to be very similar to that of Muslims. When they are among each other, they must be brutally honest (or presumably so). When communicating with those who they do not consider to be Christians, E/F's often act as is they have license to bend the truth .
